The low carb diet has been receiving much controversy until now. People are still debating whether it is healthy, safe, or merely a fad. The main issue about this diet is that it seems to be going against the consumption of grain. There have been a lot of studies and research, together with myths, lies, and backlash about this health program.
It is said that this diet has been present since olden times, back before agricultural revolution started. The usual diets of people back then were more on non-starchy vegetation and meat. Fruits that were consumed were usually those which are sour or bitter, low in sugar, and rich in fiber. The bottom line is, this food choice has been tested by time and is not a new trend as some might claim it to be.
The good thing about low carbs is that they can help prevent problems related to the digestive system. Let’s take bloating as an example. Most people are bloated from time to time and when we look at the major causes of this discomfort, high carb foods are the main culprit. Eating a lot of refined carbohydrates such as grains, potatoes, pasta, and bread can cause bloating. Skipping these foods in your meal will make you feel better.
On the down side, research shows that a low carb weight loss plan results in the reduction of important bacteria in the gut. These bacteria produce butyrate, an important substance in keeping the gut healthy and preventing cancer. Prolonged use of low carbohydrate plans for losing weight is then said to be unhealthy.
The key to improving your health is balance. Nature has provided us good sources of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, and these sources are all equally healthy. However, the problem comes when we either misuse these sources or we totally forget their importance. As a conclusion, a well balanced meal with the right amount of anything healthy is still the best choice to ensure that the body is supplied with everything that it needs.
